Echinacea, commonly known as Coneflower is native perennial member of the flowering daisy family. They are found in prairies and open, wooded areas of North America. Their hardiness and blooming power is widely popular in Okanagan gardens. Echinacea flowers are deer resistant, require little maintenance and attract hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.
Flower heads measuring 2 to 4 inches in diameter accompanied by brown central cones and dark green foliage make up the main structural features of this plant. Pink, pale purple, yellow, red, orange, green or even multi-coloured petals or ray flowers extend straight out of the center or tend to slightly bend down.
Echinacea Growing Requirements
Full sunny to light shady locations are best to for growing Echinacea flowers. They love well-drained nutritious soil but are also tolerant of rocky, clay and sandy conditions. Echinacea are an excellent choice for container planting providing a high quality all-purpose potting soil mix is used.
Echinacea Watering Needs
For best growth and flowering, moderate watering is necessary despite the drought tolerance of this plant. Soil should be dried out between watering cycles but frequent applications are needed during heat or dry spells.
Echinacea Fertilizing & Pruning
Little or no supplemental fertilizers are required for Echinacea plants. A thin layer of compost around the base of the plants each spring encourages best growing performance. Spent flower heads can be removed to prolong blooming time. Before Echinacea plants break dormancy dead growth should be cut off.
